Weird Ramblings from a Warped Mind

Why Aren’t You Blessed … 7-28-2017

Do you consider yourself blessed? Think hard about that. There is a song that says, “Count your blessings … name them one by one.” But how often do you stop and really count all the things that you are blessed with?

We are told in several books of the Bible that we must tithe. Leviticus 27:30-33, Numbers 18:21-28, Deuteronomy 26:12-13 are all scriptures that mention tithing. And it continues into the New Testament with Matthew 23:23, Luke 11:42, 18:12; and Hebrews 7:5-9. And there are numerous other instances where it is mentioned.

One of my favorites is:

9 “Honor the Lord with your wealth,
with the firstfruits of all your crops;
10 then your barns will be filled to overflowing,
and your vats will brim over with new wine.” Proverbs 3:9-10 (NIV)

“Tithe” is defined as a tenth or 10 percent. And those two verses from Proverbs tell us that we must “Honor the Lord with our wealth … with the first fruits of all of our crops.” We are to give Him 10% off the top … before we consider anything for ourselves. And if we do this, it is then our “barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.”

Tithing takes faith. It’s hard to give when you have little. But if we do, we are rewarded abundantly in return. THAT is the faith. It is the faith of the widow who gave her two mites, as told in Luke 21, 1-4.

We have tithed faithfully for several years. And it has not always been easy. But we have always been blessed in return. I’ve never really thought much about it until recently.

I am a prolific record keeper. I just LOVE a good spreadsheet. I can go back years and give you details on our taxes … or how much the electric bill was in any given month.

And it was with one of these spreadsheets that He used to show me that when my faith waned, and we didn’t tithe, we were beset with numerous problems … both financially and personally. For three years I felt we couldn’t afford to tithe based on our income and financial responsibilities. We were barely able to pay monthly bills … and some months we didn’t pay them. These were the same three years that I had some of my darkest days.

But thanks to my spreadsheets, I can see that time as plain as day. During the years we tithed faithfully, we were blessed many times over. During the three years we “couldn’t” tithe, we were not blessed nearly as much. And once we faithfully started again, our cups ranneth over.

The words “tithes and offerings” are frequently used together. The tithe is what is His already … and the offering is our gift to Him.

I see my blessings every month when I pay bills. I am actually blessed that I CAN pay them. Because I know that is just one way He shows me that we are blessed.

Have the faith to give … give what is His already. But also give more than you think you can. Because that will be where your faith will be blessed.
